Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans, has been fined ₹12 lakh by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for maintaining a slow over rate during their recent IPL 2026 clash against the Delhi Capitals.
The penalty comes despite Gujarat Titans securing a dramatic one-run victory at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Reason for the Fine
According to the IPL’s Code of Conduct, Gill was penalised under rules related to minimum over-rate offences. Since this is his first offence of the season, the punishment is limited to a monetary fine.
However, stricter consequences could follow:
- Second offence: Higher fine
- Third offence: Possible one-match ban
Gill joins players like Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma, who have also faced disciplinary action this season.
Match Highlights: GT vs DC Thriller
The match turned out to be one of the most exciting finishes of IPL 2026.
- Gujarat Titans posted 210/4, powered by:
- Shubman Gill – 70 (45 balls)
- Jos Buttler – half-century
- Washington Sundar – half-century
- Delhi Capitals chase highlights:
- KL Rahul – 92 runs
- David Miller – 41* (20 balls)
Despite a strong chase, Delhi fell short by just one run in a dramatic last-over finish.
Turning Point of the Match
A crucial moment came when Miller refused a single to Kuldeep Yadav on the penultimate delivery. The decision proved costly as Kuldeep was run out on the final ball while attempting a desperate run.
Bowling Heroes for Gujarat
Prasidh Krishna held his nerve in the final over, while Rashid Khan delivered a match-winning spell to derail Delhi’s chase.
While Shubman Gill led his team to victory with a strong performance, the slow over-rate penalty highlights how discipline and time management remain crucial in high-pressure T20 tournaments like the IPL.
