Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation after suffering a severe rib injury during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday.
According to reports, the BCCI medical team’s immediate response and on-field diagnosis were crucial in saving the 30-year-old batter’s life after he sustained internal bleeding caused by a laceration to the spleen.
BCCI Confirms Iyer’s Spleen Injury, Declares Him Stable
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer was rushed to a hospital in Sydney and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following the incident.
In an official media release on Monday, the board stated:
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”
The statement added that the Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to monitor Iyer’s recovery, in coordination with medical specialists in India and Australia.
On-Field Emergency: ‘Immediate Action Saved a Life’
The injury occurred when Iyer dived to take a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Moments later, he collapsed on the field in visible pain. His vital signs reportedly dropped alarmingly after he returned to the dressing room.
According to a PTI report, the BCCI medical staff acted “without wasting a second,” stabilizing Iyer before rushing him to the hospital.
A Dainik Jagran report cited an email from Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of the BCCI Medical Panel and the ICC Medical Committee, who reviewed Iyer’s reports and commended the medical team for their quick thinking.
“Last but not least, congratulations to the medical team on the ground. Your timely diagnosis and immediate action saved a life,” wrote Dr. Pardiwala.
Expert Oversight and Continued Monitoring
Dr. Pardiwala, who previously supervised the recoveries of Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, coordinated remotely with specialists in Sydney. The medical team continues to assess Iyer’s condition day-to-day.
A source quoted by PTI said:
“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon.”
Shreyas Iyer Out of ICU, Recovering in Sydney
Later reports from Cricbuzz confirmed that Iyer has been moved out of the ICU and is out of danger. Friends in Sydney are staying with him, while a family member from Mumbai is expected to join him shortly once visa formalities are completed.
The Indian cricket community and fans across the world have flooded social media with wishes for Iyer’s speedy recovery.
Key Takeaway
Shreyas Iyer’s near-fatal injury highlights the importance of rapid medical response in professional sports. Thanks to the BCCI medical team’s timely action, the Indian vice-captain is now on the road to recovery after what could have been a devastating incident.
