Demonstrating widespread public trust in government-backed cybersecurity initiatives, the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) Sanchar Saathi portal has officially crossed 30 crore visits.
Launched in May 2023, the platform has empowered mobile users across India to actively combat telecom fraud, report suspicious communications, and secure their digital identities.
The portal offers citizen-centric tools, including ‘Chakshu’ for reporting spam and fraudulent calls or messages, mechanisms to verify mobile connections issued under one’s identity, and a nationwide system to block and trace lost or stolen mobile handsets.
Substantial Fraud Mitigation and Handset Recoveries
Public participation through Sanchar Saathi has generated actionable intelligence for law enforcement agencies, telecom operators, and financial institutions:
- Mobile Handset Safety: Over 60.96 lakh lost or stolen mobile handsets have been blocked across all domestic networks, with 37.85 lakh devices successfully traced and over 14 lakh recovered.
- Identity Protection: More than 4 crore citizen requests regarding mobile connections registered in their names have been resolved.
- Fraud Disconnections: Based on 12.80 lakh inputs received through the Chakshu facility, action was taken in 59.82 lakh cases, resulting in the disconnection of over 50 lakh fraudulent mobile connections.
- Financial Loss Prevention: Citizen reports integrated into DoT’s Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) and Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) have helped banks and law enforcement prevent suspected financial fraud losses exceeding Rs 5,000 crore.
Accessibility and Citizen Outreach
Designed for nationwide accessibility, the Sanchar Saathi mobile app supports English, Hindi, and 21 regional languages, recording over 2.8 crore downloads to date.
The DoT continues to urge citizens to utilise the portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in) or mobile app to verify their registered mobile connections and immediately report suspicious communications, encouraging a collective approach to securing India’s telecom ecosystem.
