Sam Altman Opens Up to Raj Shamani on the Personal Cost of OpenAI's Success

In a candid conversation on Indian podcaster Raj Shamani’s Figuring Out show, OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman shared rare personal insights into how his meteoric rise to global prominence has altered his daily life, admitting that he deeply misses simple, anonymous routines like sitting alone in a coffee shop.

Speaking about the personal trade-offs of leading one of the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence companies, the 41-year-old tech leader contrasted his current high-security existence with his more carefree life prior to ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022.

From Carefree Hobbies to Rigid Schedules

During the interview, podcast host Raj Shamani asked Altman about the biggest adjustments he has had to make since OpenAI became a household name:

Altman recalled having a lighter schedule and ample personal time before OpenAI’s explosion in public visibility. “I was much more carefree when we started OpenAI. I had a very easy life at the time… I had a lot of hobbies,” Altman shared, noting he was often free for impromptu dinners with friends on short notice.

Today, however, his days are rigidly planned down to the minute. “Now I’m incredibly precisely scheduled and I have not gotten to do anything spontaneous in a long time. And that’s very sad,” he acknowledged.

The End of Anonymity and Constant Security

When pressed by Shamani on the exact moment he realized his old lifestyle was permanently gone, Altman pointed to the complete loss of public anonymity:

Altman explained that catching up on personal emails or idly browsing the web in public spaces without drawing attention is no longer possible.

When asked if he could still visit a local café, Altman remarked that while technically possible, the experience is entirely different: “I could do it, but there would be two security guys sitting at the tables next to me and I would not just be an anonymous person in the world.”
