Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced a two-year voluntary service extension for Agniveers on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, signaling the armed forces’ requirement for their continued expertise as the inaugural batch nears the end of its initial four-year tenure.

The strategic policy decision arrives weeks before the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force were scheduled to begin releasing 75% of the first Agniveer cohort in phases starting mid-November.

Voluntary Extension Ahead of December Exit Mandate

According to senior government officials, accepting the two-year extension will remain entirely voluntary for individual personnel:

  • First Batch Impact: Over 18,300 Agniveers across the tri-services were slated to exit military service by December 31, 2026, upon completing their four-year term.
  • Original Mandate Breakdown: Under the initial 2022 Agnipath model, 75% of recruits were scheduled for release while only 25% were retained for a 15-year regular service commission. The outgoing group represents three-fourths of the first batch of 24,400 recruits inducted across the Army (19,000), Air Force (2,850), and Navy (2,550).
  • Voluntary Option: Electing to stay grants trained personnel an additional two years of active service, providing flexibility while retaining technical skills across units.

Performance Satisfaction and Fleet Strength

The extension follows positive performance reviews across all three service branches, where Agniveers have been integrated into operational, technical, and combat roles.

Official data indicates that active Agniveer personnel strength has grown substantially since the scheme’s launch in June 2022, currently standing at approximately 270,000 in the Indian Army, 27,000 in the Indian Air Force, and 21,000 in the Indian Navy.
