PVR INOX to Re-Release Cult Classic Dev.D on April 24

The PVR INOX has announced the re-release of Dev.D, the critically acclaimed cult film directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film is set to return to theatres across India on April 24, offering audiences a chance to experience it once again on the big screen.

A Modern Take on a Timeless Classic

Dev.D is a contemporary adaptation of Devdas, originally written in 1917 by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Unlike traditional retellings, the film reimagines the story in a modern setting, exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and self-destruction through a raw and realistic lens.

Cast and Storyline

The film features standout performances by:

  • Abhay Deol as Dev
  • Mahie Gill as Paro
  • Kalki Koechlin as Chanda

Set across Punjab and Delhi, the story follows Dev, a privileged young man whose life spirals into substance abuse after a failed relationship. His journey takes a turn when he forms an unexpected connection with Chanda, a woman navigating her own emotional struggles.

Why Dev.D Still Matters

Director Anurag Kashyap described the film as a deliberate attempt to challenge the romanticised portrayal of Devdas in earlier adaptations.

“This Dev isn’t a romantic hero. He is flawed, impulsive, and real. His downfall is not poetic but painfully human,” Kashyap explained.

The film also redefined its female characters, presenting Paro and Chanda as independent individuals with agency, making it a progressive reinterpretation for contemporary audiences.

Music and Cultural Impact

The soundtrack, composed by Amit Trivedi, played a crucial role in the film’s success. Songs like Emosanal Attyachar and Pardesi became iconic and contributed to the film’s cult status.

Upon its original release in 2009, Dev.D received both critical acclaim and commercial success, eventually earning recognition as one of Bollywood’s most influential modern films.

Why the Re-Release Matters

According to PVR INOX, the decision to bring back the film stems from its lasting cultural impact and the immersive cinematic experience it offers.

The re-release provides both long-time fans and new viewers an opportunity to revisit—or discover—the film in theatres, where its visuals, music, and emotional depth can be fully appreciated.
