In a decisive step to safeguard one of India’s most sacred shrines, the administration has installed a cutting-edge bag scanner right at the iconic Singhadwar (Lion’s Gate) of the Shri Jagannath Temple (Srimandir).
The move aims to put an end to repeated incidents of prohibited items — mobile phones, hidden cameras and other banned objects — sneaking into the holy premises.
The ultra-modern scanner, supplied by the police administration, will now screen every small bag, purse, handbag and personal item carried by devotees before they enter the temple. Authorities believe the high-tech device will act as a strong deterrent, ensuring that no unauthorised articles make their way inside the sacred complex.
The initiative has received enthusiastic support from servitors (sevayats) and intellectuals alike. Many have described it as a timely, forward-looking and much-needed measure that strengthens both the security and sanctity of the 12th-century temple, which draws millions of pilgrims every year.
With this latest upgrade, the Srimandir joins a growing list of major Indian religious sites that are blending tradition with modern technology to protect devotees and preserve the spiritual atmosphere.
