A suspected repeat offender with more than 30 criminal cases registered against him was injured during a police encounter in Odisha’s Puri district on Saturday night after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement personnel.
The accused, identified as Bishnu Jena, also known as Chandan, sustained a gunshot injury to his right leg during the exchange near the Omkareshwar area under Baselisahi police station limits.
Police Launch Operation Based on Intelligence Inputs
According to police officials, the operation was launched after authorities received intelligence suggesting that the accused was present in the area and was allegedly preparing to carry out criminal activities.
Officials also received information indicating that he was armed. Acting on the tip-off, a police team moved to apprehend him.
During the operation, the accused allegedly opened fire on police personnel. In response, the police team retaliated in self-defence, resulting in injuries to the accused.
Accused Shifted to Hospital for Treatment
Puri DSP Rashmi Ranjan Mahapatra stated that the injured accused was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
He was first admitted to the Puri District Headquarters Hospital and later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.
Authorities confirmed that his condition is being monitored while the investigation continues.
Highway Robbery Plan Under Investigation
Police sources indicated that Bishnu Jena and his associates were allegedly gathered with plans to carry out a highway robbery when the police team arrived at the location.
As officers approached, members of the group reportedly attempted to flee. During the chase, the accused allegedly fired at police personnel.
In the ensuing exchange, he sustained injuries and was subsequently taken into custody.
Associates Escape, Search Operation Continues
While police successfully apprehended Bishnu Jena, several of his associates reportedly escaped from the scene.
Law enforcement agencies have launched efforts to trace and apprehend the remaining suspects. Search operations are continuing in nearby areas.
More Than 30 Criminal Cases Registered
Police officials said Bishnu Jena, a resident of Hatadanda under Konark police limits, is a habitual offender with more than 30 criminal cases registered against him.
The cases reportedly include highway robbery, theft, and other serious offences across Puri, Konark, Bhubaneswar, and neighbouring regions.
Investigation Focuses on Illegal Firearms
Investigators are also examining how the accused allegedly obtained the firearm used during the incident.
Police are attempting to identify the source of the weapon and determine whether a larger illegal arms network may be involved.
Officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
