Thousands of opposition supporters, trade union members, and student activists began pouring into Central Delhi on Sunday morning, November 1, 2026, as the INDIA bloc launched its high-octane “Chalo Dilli” demonstration demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The mass gathering at Ramlila Maidan—scheduled from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM—will be accompanied by a foot march commencing at noon from the Minto Road–Connaught Place intersection, despite Delhi Police maintaining that no official route clearance was sought for the procession.
‘Shop Local’ Appeal & Preparations at Ground Zero
Ahead of the rally, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi issued a unique appeal to outstation activists and local participants, urging them to support capital-based vendors and small businesses amidst the festive season:
”Protest, march, and shop. As you join the fight for democratic integrity in the national capital, make it a point to make festival purchases from local street vendors and small shopkeepers.”
- On-Ground Setup: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra alongside key alliance managers inspected final stage arrangements at Ramlila Maidan early Sunday morning. Posters proclaiming “Chalo Dilli” and calling for an end to voter-roll deletions lined major avenues across Central Delhi.
- Mass Attendance Projections: While alliance organizers claim an expected turnout approaching one million supporters from across Northern and Eastern states, law enforcement authorities have deployed multi-tier security cordons structured around an estimated crowd of 50,000 to 100,000 attendees.
BJP Counter-Protest & Economic Concerns
The political showdown in the capital has triggered immediate counter-mobilisations and economic pushback across commercial hubs:
- BJP 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Demonstration: To counter the Opposition’s anti-CEC agitation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced parallel demonstrations across the city, highlighting historical 1984 anti-Sikh riot grievances to target the Congress party.
- Traders & Labour Impact: The All India Manufacturers & Traders Association (APMA) expressed concern over transit disruptions and street closures around Connaught Place and Minto Road, warning that daily-wage labourers and festive retail traffic face severe financial distress due to the weekend shutdown.
- Senior Leaders Speak: Former Lok Sabha Speaker and Congress leader Meira Kumar—who presided over Saturday’s mock impeachment session—emphasised the systemic nature of the crisis, stating, “If we were in power, this issue would not have arisen in the first place.”
