Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is enhancing learning outcomes in Jharsuguda and Sundargarh through Project Vidya, launched in April 2025.
Focusing on foundational literacy and numeracy, as well as core subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English, the initiative has reached over 1,800 students in 17 rural schools by adding 20 educators to improve classroom engagement and student-teacher ratios.
Sundargarh’s high dropout rates highlight the need for targeted support. Project Vidya has helped increase school attendance from 64% to 76% in Lakhanpur and from 66% to 82% in Hemgir, showing significant progress in retention.
Participating schools include Govt. U.P.S Mundherkhet, Govt. P.S Ghogharpalli, and others in both Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts.
Thakur Pradhan, Headmaster of Government UPS Kudarei, said, “The additional teachers from Vedanta have improved student learning and ensured classes run smoothly. This support has made a real difference for us.”
Biswanath Pradhan, a teacher at Government Upgraded High School, Jharpalam, noted, “Project Vidya has addressed our teacher shortage, improved class engagement, and increased student attendance. The quality of education has risen, and we have even seen scholarships awarded to students.”
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), Project Vidya strengthens School Management Committees, supports headmasters in planning and tracking student progress, and enhances preparation for competitive exams and scholarships, boosting academic engagement among students.
