A violent altercation erupted on Monday between residents of Katuru and Rameyapatna villages in Ganjam district’s Chikiti area, resulting in serious injuries to seven individuals. The conflict arose over disagreements concerning the excavation of the Bahuda river mouth, a critical issue for the predominantly fishing communities in the region.
The injured, comprising five individuals from Katuru and three from Rameyapatna, were promptly admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. Authorities have confirmed that all are currently in stable condition.
In response to the violence, Golanthara police have arrested 40 individuals—19 from Katuru and 21 from Rameyapatna—for their involvement in the clash. Two separate cases have been registered at the Golanthara police station. To prevent further escalation, prohibitory orders under Section 163 have been imposed, and three platoons of police forces have been deployed in the affected areas.
Five persons from Kuturu and three from Rameyapatna sustained injuries in the clash. They are undergoing treatment at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital. A police team has also been deployed at hospital to coordinate with the doctors during the treatment,” Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said.
