On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities 2025 in New Delhi today.

At the ceremony, the President emphasised that Divyangjan deserve equality and full participation in the nation’s developmental journey. She asserted that their inclusion is not charity but a duty of all stakeholders. Moreover, she reminded the audience that “a society can be considered truly developed only with the equal participation of Divyangjan.”

Transitioning to this year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”, President Murmu highlighted that India is moving towards a rights-based, dignity-focused system for persons with disabilities, thereby moving beyond a welfare mindset. She also recalled that the adoption of the respectful term “Divyangjan” in 2015 was a step to honour their contribution and dignity.

Furthermore, the President pointed out that the government is strengthening the ecosystem for inclusion and empowerment. She noted that national-level institutions have been established in diverse fields such as sign language research and training, mental health rehabilitation, and sports training. In addition, she stated that millions of Divyangjan have already received Unique Disability ID cards, which enable them to access special facilities and benefits.

Finally, the President urged society to remain vigilant and active in safeguarding the interests of Divyangjan. She stressed that collective efforts will reinforce the government’s progressive initiatives. “It is the responsibility of all citizens to ensure the dignity, self-reliance, and self-respect of Divyangjan. Every citizen should pledge to make Divyangjan partners in social and national progress,” she concluded.
