In a landmark moment for Odisha’s political history, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the Odisha Legislative Assembly, calling on lawmakers to maintain dignity in speech and conduct while serving the people.
Murmu, who began her political career in this very Assembly, expressed gratitude for Lord Jagannath’s blessings and acknowledged the role of past colleagues in shaping her journey. She reflected on Odisha’s rich legacy—from the transformation of Emperor Ashoka after the Kalinga War to the state’s maritime trade and anti-colonial struggles—while paying tribute to leaders like Harekrushna Mahatab and Biju Patnaik.
Highlighting the growing representation of women, including the current woman Speaker, Murmu described it as a sign of India’s progress toward becoming a developed nation. She urged legislators to treat Odisha’s advancement as a life mission, envisioning a prosperous state by 2036.
“The people have sent you here with immense trust and expectations,” she reminded lawmakers, stressing their duty to bring smiles to citizens’ faces through responsible governance.
