A district court in Rayagada sentenced an accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 in a sensitive rape case involving a woman tourist.
The Additional District Judge delivered the verdict within 120 days of the incident, marking a significant example of fast-track justice under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The court also directed financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the survivor. The case dates back to November 18, 2025, when the victim and her husband were waiting in Rayagada to return to Koraput. The accused lured them to his residence in Rayot Colony under the pretext of providing accommodation and later assaulted the woman.
Following the survivor’s complaint, police acted immediately and arrested the accused. Investigators collected strong evidence and filed the chargesheet within the stipulated time. The court found the accused guilty and pronounced the sentence today.
Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania congratulated the Rayagada SP, the government lawyer, and the investigating officer for their efforts. He said the case reflects Odisha Police’s commitment to women’s safety and the effectiveness of the new legal framework.
