President Droupadi Murmu addressed the convocation ceremony of Nalanda University at Rajgir, Bihar, on March 31, 2026.

She congratulated graduating students and emphasised that their success reflects perseverance, discipline, and intellectual commitment.

The President highlighted that over half of the graduating cohort comprises international students from more than 30 countries. She said the convocation reaffirms a civilizational promise: knowledge shall endure, dialogue shall prevail, and learning shall continue to serve humanity.

Murmu recalled that ancient Nalanda University thrived as a global centre of learning for nearly eight centuries. Its decline was a monumental loss, but its resurgence symbolises national and international commitment to restoring that legacy. She noted that diverse nations have contributed to this revival, proving that shared values can achieve lofty goals.

She underlined that Nalanda welcomed diverse ideologies and fostered debate and dialogue. Knowledge was linked to ethics, society, and humanity’s welfare. She stressed that this ideal remains relevant today, especially when the world faces complex challenges.

The President expressed confidence that Nalanda University will emerge as a leading institution in Asia and globally, distinguished by academic excellence and values. She urged the university to invest in Buddhist studies, rooted in India’s civilizational foundations, while engaging with diverse traditions across Asia.

Murmu said the ancient Nalanda library contained millions of manuscripts, setting a benchmark for today’s efforts. She added that as India moves towards becoming a developed nation by 2047, institutions like Nalanda University will play a vital role in shaping the future.
