Premium Petrol Prices Hiked by Up to Rs 2.35 in India Amid Global Energy Crisis; Regular Fuel Rates Unchanged

Premium petrol prices in India have been increased by up to ₹2.35 per litre, effective March 20, as global energy markets remain volatile due to escalating tensions in West Asia.

The price hike applies to high-performance fuel variants such as:

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) Speed

  • Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Power

  • Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) XP95

According to reports, prices of these premium fuels have risen between ₹2.09 and ₹2.35 per litre. However, regular petrol prices remain unchanged for now.

Why Are Premium Petrol Prices Rising?

The increase comes amid a global energy supply disruption triggered by the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The situation escalated after strikes on Iran in late February, leading to intensified military exchanges across the Gulf region.

A major concern is the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway responsible for transporting nearly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Impact on Global Oil Markets

Global energy prices have witnessed sharp fluctuations:

  • Brent crude oil surged nearly 10% before stabilising

  • European gas prices jumped by over 35%

  • Key LNG infrastructure, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan facility, was impacted

These developments have increased import costs for India, which relies heavily on crude oil imports.

Industry Confirmation

Fuel retailers have confirmed the revised pricing. For example, premium petrol prices in parts of Punjab have risen from around ₹105.16 to ₹107.13 per litre.

Internal communications from fuel companies have also instructed petrol pump operators to update retail selling prices accordingly.

What This Means for Consumers

While the hike currently affects only premium petrol users, continued volatility in global oil markets may influence broader fuel pricing trends in the coming days.

Consumers using high-octane fuel variants may see a slight increase in fuel expenses, while regular petrol users remain unaffected for now.
