Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, the New Pamban Bridge, on this Ram Navami, April 6, 2025.
The bridge, connecting Mandapam and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, is a testament to India’s engineering innovation and rich cultural heritage.
The new bridge spans approximately 2.07 kilometers and features a unique 72.5-meter vertical lift span that allows ships to pass beneath it while ensuring uninterrupted train services. Built taller than its 1914 predecessor, it enhances rail safety, shortens travel time, and supports maritime trade, creating seamless connectivity between rail and sea transport.
Constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the project overcame significant logistical and environmental challenges in the turbulent Palk Strait. The modern design respects the spiritual and cultural significance of the region, with Rameswaram being associated with Lord Rama and the legendary Ram Setu.
The New Pamban Bridge represents not just infrastructure development but also symbolizes a bridge between India’s ancient mythology and its modern ambitions, making it an engineering and cultural landmark.
