Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang New Rail Line, a transformative infrastructure project that connects Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, to the Indian Railways network for the first time.
Valued at over ₹8,070 crore, the project is a feat of engineering and perseverance, traversing some of the most challenging terrains in the country. The 51.38 km rail line includes 45 tunnels carved through complex geological formations, 55 major bridges, and 88 minor bridges—each a testament to India’s infrastructural prowess.
Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi emphasized the strategic and developmental significance of the project, stating that it will boost trade, tourism, and accessibility in Mizoram, while strengthening national integration.
The Bairabi-Sairang line is part of the broader effort to enhance connectivity in the Northeast, a region often underserved in terms of transport infrastructure. With this rail link, Mizoram joins the rest of India’s vast railway grid, promising economic upliftment and easier movement of goods and people.
