A 21-year-old youth from Berhampur, Ganjam, identified as Suraj Sahu, passed away at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar two days after attempting self-immolation.
The young man reportedly set himself ablaze at Mentu Square under the Bada Bazar police limits, allegedly due to unresolved family issues.
Sahu sustained severe burn injuries, with nearly 80% of his body affected. He was initially admitted to the Burn Ward of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The incident has sparked conversations around mental health awareness and the urgent need for support systems for youth facing emotional distress. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
