Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. Karki, a former Chief Justice of Nepal, took oath after days of speculation following the collapse of KP Sharma Oli’s government due to massive Gen-Z-led protests.
“I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal,” PM Modi said in an online post.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the formation of the interim government, calling it a step toward peace and stability. “As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy, and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal,” the MEA said.
Karki’s rise comes amid weeks of intense protests triggered by social media restrictions and anti-corruption demands. The demonstrations turned violent, resulting in attacks on government buildings and private residences of political leaders. The Army later intervened to restore order and protect KP Sharma Oli.
Chosen through a public online vote by Gen-Z leaders on Discord, Karki enjoys broad public support and is expected to focus on restoring order, holding fresh elections, and pushing for development reforms.
NDTV reports that general elections in Nepal are scheduled for March 5, 2026, to form a new government that will replace Karki’s interim administration.
