A tragic incident in Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital has sparked outrage in the district after a third-year student from Nayagarh Autonomous College gave birth to a stillborn baby in the restroom of the hospital’s Maternal and Child Department.
The student, a resident of the Malati Chaudhury Girls’ Hostel for the past two years, visited the hospital on Thursday, complaining of severe abdominal pain, accompanied by her hostel warden.
During her initial treatment, the student went to the restroom on the pretext of urinating but unexpectedly delivered a stillborn baby there. The situation came to light after her return, and she was immediately admitted to the hospital ward for further care. The hospital authorities have since reported that her condition is stable.
The incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety and supervision of students at the Malati Chaudhury Hostel. Hostel authorities have claimed ignorance about the student’s prior relationship and pregnancy, sparking criticism for a lack of accountability. Regular visits by doctors to the hostel have also been called into question, as neither the hostel staff, medical professionals, nor the student’s family seemed aware of her pregnancy.
The student’s family, who reside in Raikia, Kandhamal district, have demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. Meanwhile, the silence from Nayagarh Autonomous College and the district education department has further fueled public discontent. Critics argue this incident exposes lapses in monitoring and care, with calls for urgent action and accountability from the concerned authorities.
