Pat Cummins is reportedly set to receive a staggering $12 million contract extension from Cricket Australia as the board moves aggressively to keep its star players committed to international cricket.
According to reports, the proposed agreement would pay Cummins nearly $4 million annually over the next three years, ensuring the Australian captain continues prioritising national duty, especially Test cricket, until 2029.
The move comes after reports emerged that an unnamed Indian Premier League franchise had attempted to lure Cummins away from international cricket with a massive long-term T20 franchise deal.
IPL Franchise Allegedly Offered Huge Freelance Contract
Reports from Australia claim that an IPL franchise approached Cummins and fellow Australian star Travis Head with an offer worth nearly $10 million to become full-time franchise cricketers.
The proposal reportedly required the players to reduce or step away from international commitments in favour of global T20 leagues. However, both players are said to have rejected the offer and reaffirmed their commitment to Australian cricket.
England fast bowler Jofra Archer was also reportedly linked to a similar franchise approach.
Cricket Australia Determined to Avoid West Indies-Style Decline
Cricket Australia’s aggressive contract strategy reflects growing concerns about the increasing financial influence of franchise cricket around the world.
The board appears determined to avoid the challenges faced by West Indies cricket team, where several top players prioritised franchise leagues over international cricket, contributing to a decline in consistency across formats.
CA Head of Cricket James Allsopp acknowledged the importance of rewarding elite performers with better long-term security and financial stability.
Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne Also in Talks
Alongside Cummins, Cricket Australia is reportedly negotiating similar high-value contracts with Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head.
The board wants to secure its core multi-format players ahead of a demanding international schedule that includes 21 Test matches over the next 12 months.
Cummins is expected to return fully to Test cricket after recovering from a back injury that limited his participation during the 2025–26 Ashes series.
IPL 2026 Success with Sunrisers Hyderabad
Currently, Cummins and Travis Head are representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026. Both players have played key roles in helping the franchise climb to the top of the points table and remain strong contenders for the playoffs.
Cummins, who captains Sunrisers Hyderabad, has impressed with both leadership and bowling performances throughout the season.
Big Bash League Future in Doubt
If the proposed Cricket Australia contract is finalised, Cummins may no longer feature regularly in the Big Bash League due to workload management and scheduling priorities.
The deal would underline Cricket Australia’s strategy of protecting its premier players from the growing pull of global T20 franchise cricket.
