A terrifying scene unfolded at Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College and Hospital on Thursday when a portion of the ceiling collapsed inside the Cancer Department, sending patients and healthcare workers running for safety.
Despite the sudden structural failure and heavy debris crashing onto the floor, patients and their attendants managed a miraculous escape without sustaining any reported physical injuries.
Moments of Chaos and Panic
The incident occurred during routine hours inside the specialised wing, where several vulnerable patients were receiving care or waiting for medical consultations. Witnesses reported hearing a sudden, loud cracking noise overhead just seconds before chunks of concrete plaster crashed down onto the hospital floor.
The loud crash immediately triggered panic throughout the ward, as caregivers frantically helped patients—many frail from cancer treatments—move out of the dangerous zone. Medical staff quickly intervened to calm the situation and clear the immediate area of debris.
“We suddenly heard a deafening sound and saw plaster tumbling down right near the patient care area. It was sheer luck that nobody was standing directly underneath at that exact second.”

Prompt Evacuation and Emergency Response
Following the collapse, hospital administration moved swiftly to secure the facility. Affected patients were immediately shifted to safe, alternate wards within the hospital complex to ensure their treatment continued uninterrupted.
A preliminary inspection was initiated by the hospital administration to determine the root cause of the crumbling structure. While factors like moisture seepage, structural ageing, or substandard maintenance are suspected, officials have assured that immediate repair work will be undertaken to prevent further hazards.
Mounting Concerns Over Facility Maintenance
This frightening lapse has once again drawn severe criticism regarding the infrastructure maintenance at premier government medical institutions across the region. Local public health advocates and patients’ families have voiced strong outrage, urging government authorities to conduct a comprehensive structural audit of all older and heavily used hospital wings.
For the patients fighting critical health battles in MKCG’s cancer ward, Thursday’s incident served as an unwanted trauma—though one thankfully spared of tragedy.
