Bhubaneswar: Online fraudsters are on the prowl in the state, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Uma Shankar Dash said here today.
He said the cybercriminals have swindled over Rs 10 lakh from people in the last three days and added that Bhubaneswar urban police district (UPD) has been receiving 40-50 calls on an average per day in this regard.
The DCP said most of the fraud cases are through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or ATM card transactions.
Dash cautioned people against sharing One Time Password (OTP), personal details like Aadhaar Card number with others and clicking on unfamiliar URLs.
The police officer said cybercriminals are mostly committing two types of frauds, through or through malicious links or messages.
He said a person has called up one such customer care for cancelling credit card. After a few minutes, the customer got a call from another person who directed him to share the OTP sent on his mobile phone for completing the process of cancelling the card.
The person in question learnt later that money was fraudulently debited from his account.
