Over two crore Olive Ridley turtle hatchlings have begun their journey to the sea from Rushikulya beach after spending 45 days buried in the sand.
The rare species emerged from their eggs and crawled toward the waves, creating a mesmerising sight that drew crowds of tourists and locals.
Forest officials, volunteers, and residents worked tirelessly to guide the hatchlings safely to the water. Many baby turtles lost direction while moving toward the sea, prompting rescuers to collect and release them near the shoreline. The coordinated effort ensured that thousands reached the ocean unharmed.
This year’s hatchling count is lower than last year’s eight crore due to erratic weather and reduced mass nesting. Officials reported that over 2.05 lakh Olive Ridley turtles had laid eggs at Rushikulya two months ago. The eggs remained buried for nearly 50 days before hatching began on May 5.
The spectacle, which unfolds between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m., has turned Rushikulya beach into a vibrant hub of conservation and tourism. Visitors from across Odisha and beyond flocked to witness the hatchlings’ first steps toward the sea.
Forest authorities assured that all safety measures are in place to protect the hatchlings. Khallikote ACF stated that future plans include improving nesting sites and ensuring better conditions for mass nesting.
The sight of tiny turtles crawling toward the waves symbolises the beginning of life and the enduring beauty of Odisha’s coastal ecosystem.
