Odisha Weather: IMD Issues Red Alert for Six Districts as Low-Pressure Area Triggers Heavy Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for six districts of Odisha as a newly formed low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify over the next 48 hours, bringing widespread heavy rainfall across the state.

According to the IMD, the weather system is likely to remain active for the next five days, with northern, coastal, western and interior districts expected to receive significant rainfall.

Red Warning for six districts

The IMD has issued a Red Warning for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Keonjhar, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected on Saturday.

Residents in these districts have been advised to remain alert as intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging, reduced visibility and disruptions to normal life.

Orange and Yellow alerts for several districts

An Orange Warning has been issued for Balasore, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall.

A Yellow Warning remains in effect for Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Ganjam, where moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast.

Weather expert explains rainfall pattern

Weather expert Biswajit Sahoo said the low-pressure area has developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the Odisha–West Bengal coast and is expected to strengthen further.

“A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the West Bengal–Odisha coast. Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely to continue across Odisha over the next few days. Northern and coastal districts are expected to witness the most intense rainfall,” he said.

Fishermen asked not to venture into the sea

The weather office has also forecast gusty surface winds of 30–40 kmph in several parts of the state during the warning period.

Considering the rough sea conditions, authorities have advised fishermen to stay ashore until further notice. People living in vulnerable areas have also been urged to remain cautious, monitor official weather updates and follow advisories issued by the administration.

With the low-pressure system expected to intensify further, Odisha is likely to experience continued rainfall over the coming days, prompting authorities to closely monitor the evolving weather situation.
