Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday reaffirmed the Centre’s unwavering commitment to transforming Odisha into a major Green Energy Hub by 2036, while addressing the Odisha State Plenary at the ongoing Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026.
Speaking in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Joshi highlighted the state’s ambitious target of 10.96 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030, spanning solar, wind, pumped storage and green hydrogen. “Odisha holds immense potential in solar, wind, pumped storage and green hydrogen. I firmly believe Odisha can achieve much more. The Centre stands fully committed to turning its potential into investments, jobs and reliable clean energy,” he said.
The remarks come at a pivotal moment. Odisha has already attracted prospective investment proposals worth approximately ₹1.17 lakh crore through 18 MoUs exchanged at the summit, with a tentative capacity addition of around 11.7 GW. These span pumped storage, solar, wind, hybrid projects, battery storage, green hydrogen, green ammonia and even green data centres. Chief Minister Majhi, who also addressed the plenary, described the response as a watershed moment and invited investors to partner in making Odisha one of India’s top five power-exporting states and the clean-energy engine of eastern India.
Addressed the Odisha State Plenary at #BharatRenewableEnergySummit2026 in the presence of CM of Odisha, Shri @MohanMOdisha ji and Deputy CM of Odisha, Shri @KVSinghDeo1 ji.
With a target of 10.96 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030, Odisha holds immense potential in solar, wind, pumped storage and green hydrogen. Highlighted progress under @PMSuryaGhar and #PMKUSUM, while emphasising the need to accelerate implementation.
Firmly believe Odisha can achieve much more. The Centre stands fully committed to turning its potential into investments, jobs and reliable #CleanEnergy, advancing its vision of a Green Energy Hub by 2036.

Joshi’s address also dovetailed with the broader national and global narrative he presented at a press conference during the summit. India has been elected President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for a third consecutive term, reinforcing the vision of “One Sun, One World, One Grid.” He emphasised that solar energy is empowering millions of farmers — with efforts underway to reach 3 million farmers through solarisation and Agri-PV models — and pointed to PM-KUSUM as a proven template for reducing irrigation costs and creating additional income streams.
In Odisha, this farmer-centric approach is already showing results on the ground. Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the state has climbed to 7th nationally in rooftop solar installations, crossing 1.74 lakh systems with over 3.12 lakh applications received. Combined central and state subsidies have accelerated adoption, particularly among households. Under PM-KUSUM, Odisha has achieved strong progress on standalone solar pumps (installing roughly 15,780 of the 18,441 sanctioned units), though grid-connected components still require acceleration — an area Joshi specifically called out for faster implementation.
Odisha’s natural advantages further strengthen the case. The state estimates nearly 49 GW of pumped storage potential, over 12 GW of floating solar across reservoirs, more than 12 GW of coastal wind potential, and significant green hydrogen and ammonia opportunities. A ₹19,348 crore grid expansion under the Mukhya Mantri Shakti Vikas Yojana is underway to support this scale-up. Earlier announcements, including a Utility-Led Aggregation model for 1.5 lakh rooftop systems, have already laid groundwork for deeper penetration.
The Bharat RE Summit, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 2 and running till November 5 under the theme “Invest. Innovate. Inspire,” has provided the perfect platform for these alignments. With 13 states showcasing opportunities and strong international participation, Odisha’s session stood out for its concrete investment pipeline and clear long-term vision aligned with India’s 500 GW non-fossil target and the ISA’s Global South focus.
As Joshi concluded, the message is one of shared responsibility and tangible outcomes. With the Centre’s full backing, progressive state policies, and a surge in investor interest, Odisha is positioning itself not just as a participant but as a leader in India’s clean energy transition — turning abundant natural resources into jobs, reliable power, and a greener future for its people.
