The Odisha government is set to notify 1,635 new revenue villages as part of a major restructuring of administrative boundaries. The Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure precise demarcation, avoiding overlaps with existing villages.
District collectors, Revenue Divisional Commissioners (RDCs), and the Director of Land Records and Survey have been directed to fast-track updated maps and land records for the newly created villages. Each will have distinct land records, plot numbers, and accounts to maintain data accuracy.
The move follows persistent public demands and recommendations from district officials. Between 1991 and 2024, around 1,000 villages were granted revenue village status, but mapping was completed for only 300. Mapping for the remaining 700 remained incomplete.
The new plan addresses both pending and newly added villages, bringing the total to 1,635. To aid implementation, dedicated mapping cells will be set up in every tehsil.
Officials say the initiative will bring administrative clarity, improve governance, and enhance service delivery in the newly notified areas.
