The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Odisha Police has taken major action against a criminal syndicate operating in Kendujhar district, obtaining a remand for key accused Soumya Shankar Chakra, alias Raja, in connection with a fraud case amounting to ₹1.22 crore.
The action stems from a written complaint lodged by Sasmita Bej (41) of Suakati village under Kendujhar Sadar Police Station limits. Following the complaint, the EOW registered Case No. 16 on October 6, 2026, under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to cheating, fraud, forgery, criminal intimidation, and organised crime. The primary accused named in the case are Soumya Shankar Chakra, Sadasiba Samal, and their associates.
Forcible Takeover and Fraud
According to the EOW investigation, Chakra and his associate Sadasiba Samal fraudulently registered a patch of land (Plot No. 335 in Nunujharan under Raghunathpur Gram Panchayat, Kendujhar) in Samal’s name. The duo forcibly removed an existing stone crusher unit belonging to the complainant and installed their own unit at the site.
Investigators revealed that the accused cheated the victim out of ₹1.22 crore by falsely assuring her of full payment for the land and her crusher unit. When the victim pressed for her dues, the syndicate allegedly threatened her with dire consequences.
Deep-Rooted Crime Syndicate
The investigation further exposed that Raja Chakra and his network have built an organised crime syndicate to run illegal mining and land acquisition operations across Kendujhar district. Both Chakra and Samal are already charge-sheeted in 10 criminal cases across Kendujhar and other districts in Odisha involving cheating, forgery, and financial misconduct.
Chakra, who was already in judicial custody at Baleswar Jail regarding a separate case, was produced before the OPID Court in Baleshwar. Based on prima facie evidence presented by the Investigating Officer, the court granted his remand into intermediate jail custody and issued a warrant to the Superintendent of District Jail, Baleshwar.
The EOW stated that further investigation is actively underway to apprehend other members and associates involved in the racket.
