Authorities will soon install a digital road accident clock at AG Square, one of Bhubaneswar’s busiest intersections, to raise awareness about road safety and encourage responsible driving.
The Transport Joint Director informed the General Manager of Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited through an official letter that the clock will display the number of fatalities caused by road accidents in Odisha. The initiative aims to highlight the severity of accidents and inspire citizens to adopt safe practices such as wearing seatbelts, avoiding overspeeding, and using helmets.
Officials explained that the clock will serve as a constant reminder of the dangers on the road. By placing it at AG Square—located on the Acharya Vihar-Airport route—authorities expect lakhs of commuters to view it daily and become more conscious of traffic rules.
According to Transport Department data, Odisha records one road accident every ten minutes, with more than 5,500 deaths annually. The accident clock will bring these alarming figures directly before the public, reinforcing the importance of safety measures.
The Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited has already begun preparations for the installation. The initiative has drawn praise from various quarters as a positive step toward reducing accidents and saving lives.
Officials stressed that the clock is not just a display but a tool to promote behavioural change. They urged citizens to follow traffic regulations diligently and contribute to building a safer urban environment.
