The Odisha government has scrapped the previous tender and contract awarded to Ceigall India and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the design and construction of the Bhubaneswar Metro project.
The decision marks a significant reset in the state’s flagship urban transport initiative, with authorities now preparing a fresh framework to accelerate the project.
A high-level ministerial meeting, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister K.V. Singh Deo on July 16, reviewed the existing plans and decided on a new approach. Urban Development Minister Usha Devi confirmed that the government is working on revised proposals that will soon be presented to the Central Government for approval and funding support.
“The metro project will continue with the full cooperation of the Centre. A new plan will be finalized shortly to ensure the project meets modern standards and timelines,” the minister stated.
The Bhubaneswar Metro, envisioned as a crucial step towards improving the capital city’s urban infrastructure and easing traffic congestion, has been a key priority for the state. With the old contract now cancelled, the project is set for a fresh push, with the state expecting to finalize new tenders and implementation strategies in the coming months.
