In view of the ongoing heatwave sweeping across western Odisha, the state government has revised working hours for government offices in Sambalpur district. Effective from April 10 to June 15, all government offices and Executive Magistrate Courts will operate from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM, without a lunch break.
The directive, issued in line with an earlier government order, aims to protect employees from extreme afternoon heat and ensure a safer and more comfortable working environment.
The official letter stated, “All concerned officers and staff are directed to attend their respective offices during the revised summer schedule set by the Government of Odisha.”
Heatwave Conditions Escalate
The decision comes amid soaring temperatures in western Odisha, where midday heat has become unbearable, posing risks to both commuters and workers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued high temperatures, with no major relief expected in the coming days.
Temperatures are likely to stay above 40°C in isolated districts including Jharsuguda, Bolangir, and Boudh, even as low-pressure conditions loom. Sambalpur, too, remains on alert due to the heatwave intensity.
Advisory for Residents
In addition to the new timings, the state government has urged citizens to stay indoors during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary travel to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The early schedule adjustment is expected to ease the burden on public servants and improve overall productivity during Odisha’s challenging summer season.
