In a vibrant display of cultural reverence, the Odisha Revenue Department observed “Handloom Dress Day” on Friday, with all officers and employees arriving at work adorned in the state’s traditional handloom garments.
This initiative not only highlights Odisha’s affluent handloom tradition but also serves as a tribute to the skilled weavers who preserve this ancient craft.
The event, held at the Lok Seva Bhawan, saw enthusiastic participation from the department’s workforce, culminating in a group photograph in front of the building. This collective gesture underscores the department’s commitment to promoting Odisha’s handloom heritage and fostering greater appreciation for its cultural significance.
Speaking on the occasion, Additional Chief Secretary, Revenue, Dr Arabinda Kumar Padhee, emphasised the broader goals of the program. “This effort aims to encourage the use of indigenous handloom products while providing vital support to local weavers’ livelihoods,” he stated. Dr Padhee further noted that such initiatives will heighten awareness and recognition of Odisha’s distinctive handloom traditions among government employees and the general public alike.
ACS Padhee also lauded the officers and staff for their keen involvement, highlighting how their participation amplifies the message of cultural promotion. It is noteworthy that prior to this, the secretary had issued a circular to all departmental offices, urging employees to wear handloom attire every Friday as a means to champion Odisha’s traditional weaving culture.
This weekly observance is part of a larger push to integrate cultural pride into everyday professional life, bridging the gap between heritage and modernity. By donning these handcrafted outfits, the department not only boosts the morale of weavers but also inspires wider adoption of sustainable, locally produced textiles across the state.
As Odisha continues to celebrate its artistic legacy, initiatives like Handloom Fridays stand as a beacon of support for artisans, ensuring that the threads of tradition remain woven into the fabric of contemporary society.
