The month of January 2025 witnessed a dramatic surge in crime rates across Odisha, as revealed in a written reply by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi in the Assembly.
The statistics highlight a grim picture with 111 murders and 149 cases of mistreatment of women reported during the month.
The report further disclosed a total of 655 cases of mistreatment, 79 instances of sexual harassment, 20 robberies, 1509 thefts, 101 riots, and 194 cyber crimes. Authorities also documented 11 obscene videos made and 31 harassment cases against women in this period. The Chief Minister described January 2025 as a month marked by unprecedented crime rates in the state.
Chief Minister Majhi presented these figures while responding to a question from MLA Ramesh Chandra Behera. Notably, the state hosted two major events – Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Make in Odisha Conclave – and welcomed visits from both the Prime Minister and the President during this period. Despite these significant events, the crime rates escalated to record levels.
In his response, the Chief Minister also shared the crime statistics for the year 2024, which included 1258 murders, 356 robberies, 17805 thefts, 1471 riots, 2501 cyber crimes, 7299 cases of misconduct, 1082 instances of sexual harassment, 1839 cases of public misconduct against women, 111 obscene video recordings, and 365 harassment cases against women.
