Odisha Braces for Thunderstorms and Rain as Cyclonic Circulation Triggers Multi-Day Weather Alerts

A significant weather system is currently influencing conditions across Odisha, as an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the interior regions of the state at an altitude of approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level.

This development is expected to bring widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the coming days. Authorities have cautioned residents about associated risks, including lightning strikes, hailstorms, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), multiple districts are under varying alert levels. On May 5, several areas including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Kandhamal, Ganjam, and Gajapati are under an orange warning, indicating the likelihood of severe thunderstorms with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kmph, along with possible hailstorms and heavy rain. Meanwhile, districts such as Khordha, Puri, Cuttack, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur are under a yellow warning, signaling moderate thunderstorm activity with winds up to 40–50 kmph, especially during afternoon and evening hours.

The weather activity is expected to continue into May 6, with central and northern districts like Sambalpur, Angul, Deogarh, and Boudh likely to experience intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall under orange alert conditions. Sundargarh may also witness hailstorms with strong winds. Other regions across coastal and southern Odisha will remain under yellow warning, with moderate storm activity and gusty winds.

By May 7, the intensity of the system is projected to gradually reduce, although several districts including Rayagada, Kandhamal, Ganjam, and Gajapati may still experience thunderstorms with winds up to 40–50 kmph. Coastal and northern regions are expected to see milder conditions, with wind speeds ranging between 30–40 kmph.

From May 7 to May 10, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to persist in parts of the state, particularly in coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Puri. While some areas may experience relatively dry conditions, the risk of intermittent storms and gusty winds remains.

Residents are strongly advised to take precautionary measures during this period. Staying indoors during thunderstorms, avoiding open areas and water bodies, and securing loose objects can help reduce risks. Farmers are encouraged to protect crops, especially vulnerable fruits and vegetables, from potential damage caused by hail and strong winds. Authorities have also highlighted the possibility of localized flooding, fallen trees, and temporary power disruptions.

With changing weather patterns and increasing storm activity, staying updated with official advisories and ensuring preparedness can help communities minimize risks and ensure safety.
