The Odisha Transport Department has prohibited the use of unauthorized labels such as “Police” and “OHRC” on personal vehicle number plates across the state.
The directive aims to prevent misuse of official designations and ensure uniform compliance with vehicle registration rules.
The order has been issued by the State Transport Commissioner to all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Odisha. Officials have clarified that only the officially assigned registration number should be displayed on vehicle number plates. Any additional text, logos, or symbols are strictly not permitted.
To enforce the directive, authorities have launched a statewide verification drive, which will continue until April 10, 2026. During this period, vehicles displaying unauthorized markings will be identified and inspected.
The restriction applies not only to “Police” and “OHRC” but also to other designations such as “Press,” “Army,” or similar labels when used without proper authorization. Officials noted that such markings can create confusion and may be misused to gain undue advantage.
Vehicles found violating the rules may face penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act. Enforcement teams have been instructed to remove unauthorized logos and take appropriate legal action where necessary.
The Transport Department emphasized that the measure promotes transparency, fairness, and road safety. It also ensures that official insignia are used only by authorized personnel.
Residents are encouraged to check their vehicle number plates and comply with the guidelines to avoid penalties during the verification drive.
