With a state-wide Odisha Bandh called for tomorrow (October 8), clarity has finally emerged regarding public transportation across the state, bringing mixed news for daily commuters. While private buses will operate as usual, auto-rickshaw services will remain completely shut down.
Private Buses to Run; Security Requested
Lokanath Pani, President of the Private Bus Owners’ Association, clarified that bus transport falls under essential services. Keeping the convenience of long-distance passengers in mind, private buses will not participate in tomorrow’s shutdown. Buses will operate as per schedule across all routes statewide.
However, emphasising the safety of commuters, staff, and vehicles during the bandh, the association has requested adequate security arrangements from the state government and local police administration.
Auto-Rickshaws to Stay Off Roads
In contrast, auto-rickshaw services across Odisha will come to a complete standstill. According to the Secretary of the Auto Drivers’ Association, neither offline nor online auto services will be available from 6 AM to 6 PM tomorrow. The association has extended full support to the bandh and decided to observe a 12-hour “Chaka Bandh” (wheel strike).
Impact on Daily Passengers
While the decision to operate private buses offers major relief to inter-city travellers, local commuters within urban areas face potential disruptions. Transport to railway stations, bus terminals, and hospitals is expected to be impacted due to the absence of auto-rickshaws. However, emergency vehicles, including ambulances and medical services, have been fully exempted from the shutdown.
