In a major boost to Odisha’s public healthcare system, the Health and Family Welfare Department has sanctioned 152 new teaching and specialist positions across super specialty departments in government medical colleges and hospitals.
The approved posts include Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, and Senior Residents in critical areas such as Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, and Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS). These positions will be created in premier institutions including Capital Hospital (Bhubaneswar), SCB Medical College (Cuttack), MKCG Medical College (Berhampur), VIMSAR (Burla), and newer medical colleges in Koraput, Baripada, Balangir, Balasore, Talcher, and Puri.
Key Highlights of the Approval:
- Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar: New posts in Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Nephrology, and CTVS.
- Saheed Laxman Naik Medical College, Koraput; Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College, Baripada;
- Bhima Bhoi Medical College, Balangir; Fakir Mohan Medical College, Balasore; Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College, Talcher; and Sri Jagannath Medical College, Puri: Strengthened with Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, and Nephrology faculty.
- MKCG Medical College, Berhampur: Haematology department expansion.
- VIMSAR, Burla: CTVS and Surgical Gastroenterology posts.
- SCB Medical College, Kataka: Additional CTVS positions.
This strategic move aims to address the shortage of highly qualified specialists in government facilities, making advanced medical care more accessible to the people of Odisha, especially in underserved regions.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling welcomed the decision, stating:

This approval will significantly enhance manpower and help us deliver world-class treatment closer to the people. The state government remains dedicated to providing excellent health services to every citizen.
The minister expressed confidence that the new recruitments will strengthen human resources and take Odisha’s health services to greater heights.
In the last two years, the department has already recruited 5,197 Medical Officers and Paramedical Staff, approved 5,989 Nursing Officers, 240 Radiographers, 1,108 Pharmacist Officers, 238 Ophthalmic Officers, and 380 Medical Lab Technicians, reflecting the government’s sustained focus on strengthening the health sector.
