The Odisha government has activated its disaster-ready plan as a possible cyclone forms over the Bay of Bengal. State Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said on Friday that all departments are on high alert to protect lives and property.
Odisha on High Alert for Possible Cyclone
Speaking to the media, Minister Pujari said that Odisha is fully prepared to face any emergency.
“Odisha is a disaster-prone state, and we are ready to handle any adverse situation,” he said.
He added that key departments like Energy, Health, and Agriculture have been asked to stay alert and ensure quick response during emergencies.
IMD Forecasts Rainfall Across Several Districts
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), southern, interior, and western parts of Odisha may receive moderate to heavy rainfall due to the developing low-pressure area.
The Minister said that the government is coordinating with all departments to safeguard people, crops, and infrastructure.
“We are monitoring possible crop loss and damage to power lines. The Energy Department has been instructed to ensure quick restoration of electricity,” he added.
Districts Prepare for Emergency Measures
Minister Pujari explained that the Revenue Department is handling overall planning, while district administrations will execute relief operations.
“District officials will handle evacuations, relief supplies, and on-ground safety,” the Minister said.
He also mentioned that no decision has been taken yet on cancelling government employees’ leave.
“The cyclone is expected between October 28 and 29. We have enough time to decide if such a step is needed,” he noted.
Odisha’s Disaster Management Model Praised
Odisha is known for its effective disaster response system. Over the years, the state has improved early warning systems, built stronger shelters, and trained local communities.
These efforts have helped reduce cyclone-related deaths and improve rescue and recovery operations. The Minister urged people to follow official updates and avoid spreading rumors about the cyclone.
