A Class 10 student, Amit Majhi (16), died after suffering from fever at the Anwesha Hostel near Khariar Road in Nuapada district.

His family alleged negligence by hostel authorities in providing timely medical care.

Amit, son of Tarakeshwar Majhi from Chingarasara village under Bishora Panchayat, studied at K.G. Saraf Public School under the Anwesha scheme and stayed at the hostel near Gopabandhu Vidyapitha. He had been suffering from fever for several days. On April 9, hostel staff took him to the Khariar Road Group Health Centre and informed his family.

His parents reached the hostel the next day and took him home. They later treated him at a private clinic in Khariar Road. When his condition worsened, doctors advised shifting him to Burla Medical College. The family instead admitted him to a private hospital in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh, where he died on April 17 evening during treatment.

The body reached his village on Saturday morning. Bhanupratap Singh Majhi, president of the District Tribal Welfare Association, visited the family and expressed condolences. He demanded a high-level inquiry into the alleged negligence and urged the administration to provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the bereaved family.

Majhi warned that if authorities fail to act, the association will file a case against the responsible hostel officials and district welfare staff.
