The National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) under the Ministry of Textiles has launched India’s first scientific model for dignified recycling of National Flags and defence-grade fibres.
The initiative, supported by the Atal Centre of Textile Recycling and Sustainability at IIT Delhi, Panipat, combines technology, innovation, and national purpose.
The Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) will host a demonstration event in Panipat on November 28, 2025. Moreover, the event will showcase these innovations, bring together industry and government stakeholders, and reinforce NTTM’s role in driving sustainability and integration in technical textiles.
For the first time, India has adopted a structured and scientifically sound process for the dignified recycling of retired national flags. The project ensures that the Tricolour’s fabric and integrity are preserved or responsibly repurposed without compromising its dignity. Consequently, the model integrates sustainability with patriotic values and complements the spirit of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign.
Alongside this, the Aramid Fibre Recycling Programme has delivered breakthrough solutions for managing high-performance aramid waste, a critical material used in defence, aerospace, and protective textiles. Furthermore, several industries have already begun adopting these R&D outcomes, signalling strong confidence and underscoring NTTM’s success in translating research into scalable applications.
Ultimately, the initiative sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in technical textiles. It blends innovation with national pride and demonstrates how science can serve both environmental responsibility and patriotic values.
