Cuttack: Badambadi Police has arrested a notorious inter-state burglar, found to be involved in more than 100 cases, in connection with committing theft of jewellery and cash from a house at Bikash Nagar in Cuttack city.
According to police, the arrested man, identified as Hemanta Kumar Dash of Hatasahi, under Lingaraj PS limits in Khordha- BBSR UPD, is a habitual offender and had been committing burglary since 1986. Another man identified as Baidyanath Sahu (37) of Dadhapatana under Baranga PS, who received the stolen articles, has been arrested and the stolen ornaments and cash were recovered from them, the police said.
On the basis of a complaint filed by one Pratap Chandra Das (75) of Bikash Nagar on January 30 at Badambadi police station, a case (31/21) was registered under Sections 457 & 380 of the IPC, and SI Dilip Kumar Mohanty was handed over the investigation.
As per the FIR, on the night of January 29, miscreants broke open the lock of the complainant’s house and one of his rented offices and made away with gold ornaments worth around Rs 3 lakh and a cash amount of Rs 50,000. The complainant also mentioned in the FIR that some cheques and other materials were also missing from his rented office.
During the investigation, it was ascertained that the accused Hemanta Kumar Dash had committed theft in the house by breaking the locks on the intervening night of 29th and 30th January in absence of the house owner and took away gold ornaments and cash. Later, he disposed off the gold ornaments to accused Baidyanath Sahu.
Accused Hemanta Das is a veteran inter-state burglar, who has been committing burglary since 1986. He has been forwarded more than 100 criminal cases. Even, he has been involved in different criminal cases of West Bengal and Maharashtra, the police further said.
