The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a groundbreaking initiative to tackle fraudulent practices in medical colleges across India.
Starting May 1, 2025, faculty attendance will be recorded through a face-based Aadhaar authentication system, replacing the traditional fingerprint-based Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS).
Faculty members will be required to install a face-based Aadhaar Authentication App, available on Android and Apple platforms. Attendance will only be logged within a 100-meter radius of designated campus locations, identified through GPS coordinates.
The move is aimed at eliminating “ghost” faculty members, who are often reported to be present during inspections but are absent otherwise. This issue has plagued some medical colleges for years, undermining the quality of medical education. The NMC will now directly monitor attendance to ensure greater accountability and transparency.
This new system is expected to bring significant reforms to India’s medical education sector, addressing long-standing problems and paving the way for a more credible academic environment.
