The Department of Financial Services (DFS) under the Ministry of Finance has refuted media reports claiming that banks were instructed to close inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) accounts. The Ministry emphasized that no such directive has been issued.

The DFS stated that instead of closure, a nationwide three-month outreach campaign has been launched from July 1, 2025, aimed at reinforcing financial inclusion. The initiative is designed to promote schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana, Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Atal Pension Yojana, with banks taking proactive steps to conduct re-KYC (Know Your Customer) updates for accounts where due.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the momentum of the PMJDY, noting that account numbers are steadily increasing, and no mass closures have been recorded. Banks have been advised to contact dormant account holders and encourage them to reactivate their accounts, reflecting the government’s inclusive financial vision rather than account elimination.

The press note concludes that media speculation on mass closures is baseless, and the primary goal of ongoing efforts is to ensure broader coverage and accessibility of welfare schemes for the Indian populace.
