Veteran leader Nitish Kumar was sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Friday, marking a significant political shift that could soon lead to a change in leadership in Bihar.

Transition from State to National Politics

Nitish Kumar, who has served as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister, took the oath nearly a month after being elected to the Upper House on March 16. His move signals a transition from state politics in Patna to a larger role in national politics in New Delhi.

Despite taking oath, Kumar has not yet stepped down as Chief Minister. As per constitutional provisions, he can continue in the role for up to six months, although political developments indicate an earlier resignation is likely.

Resignation Likely Within Days

Senior leaders from the ruling alliance have indicated that Kumar may resign as Chief Minister within the next two to four days after returning to Patna. Discussions are currently underway within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to decide on his successor.

A high-level meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in Delhi is reportedly focusing on finalising the roadmap for Bihar’s next leadership.

Succession Process Underway

Officials confirmed that the selection of a new Chief Minister will follow NDA legislative procedures. The transition is expected to be smooth, with alliance partners working to maintain political stability in the state.

A Political Legacy

Nitish Kumar began his political journey as an MLA in 1985 and went on to serve as a Union Minister under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He first became Bihar Chief Minister in 2005 and has since played a central role in shaping the state’s governance and development trajectory.
