A handwoven Sambalpuri saree crafted by national award-winning weaver Sukanti Meher of Barpali, Bargarh district, has drawn national attention after Nita Ambani wore it.
The saree, ordered through Reliance Group’s Swadesh initiative, highlights Odisha’s rich weaving tradition and the artistry of its weavers.
Sukanti Meher, who has dedicated decades to keeping Sambalpuri bandha kala alive, infused intricate motifs and philosophical designs into the saree. Inspired by the Mundaka Upanishad, the design depicts two birds sitting on a tree, symbolising deep philosophical thought expressed through weaving. Each thread reflects patience, creativity, and craftsmanship, transforming fabric into art.
The saree’s motifs and colours represent Odisha’s cultural pride, with Sambalpuri textiles long celebrated across India. The Ambani family had earlier purchased sarees during the Swadesh Mela at the Nita-Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, where artisans from various states showcased traditional crafts. Sukanti and her husband presented their creations, leading to further orders.
Nita Ambani’s choice to wear this saree has elevated Odisha’s weaving community, bringing recognition to women artisans who sustain the tradition at home and in festivals. For the weavers of Barpali, this moment is a symbol of honour and global visibility.
