Indian sailing star Nethra Kumanan finally broke her continental medal jinx on Friday, clinching a hard-fought bronze in the women’s dinghy event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026.
The Chennai-based trailblazer finished strong behind Thailand’s gold-medalist Sophia Montgomery and Singapore’s silver-medalist Jania Ang. For the 29-year-old Olympian, this podium finish marks a watershed moment in her illustrious career. Having previously represented India at the 2014, 2018, and 2023 editions without a medal, Nethra’s perseverance has finally paid off on the grandest stage.
A Dramatic Turnaround in the Finals
Nethra’s path to the podium was far from a smooth sail. She faced an uphill battle after a difficult start in the final stage, finishing sixth in her opening final race. Showing trademark resilience, she bounced back brilliantly in the second race, crossing the line in first place to roar back into medal contention.
She finished level on net points with Hong Kong’s Stephanie Louise Norton, but ultimately secured the bronze badge courtesy of superior head-to-head tie-break criteria.
Boosting India’s Sailing Success
Nethra’s bronze adds further momentum to India’s phenomenal campaign on the water at the 2026 Games. It complements the pair of sailing medals won earlier in the week, where Manu Francis and Kurisinkal Noble captured silver in the men’s skiff, and Harshita Tomar paired with Shital Verma to earn bronze in the women’s skiff event.
Having cemented her legacy as the first Indian woman sailor to qualify for the Olympics—a feat she achieved for Tokyo and repeated for Paris—Nethra’s latest milestone adds another proud chapter to Indian water sports.
