In a sharp attack that has intensified political temperatures in Odisha, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik has accused the ruling BJP government of unleashing “repressive tactics” against elected representatives, particularly women, who dare to raise development concerns.
The controversy centers on Chameli Ojha, the 33-year-old Sarpanch of Tikhiri Gram Panchayat under Mahakalapada block in Kendrapara district. Known locally as a fiery “Lady Singham” for her past confrontations with officials during encroachment drives, Ojha found herself at the centre of a high-voltage clash on June 11. Police detained her following a heated confrontation at the block development office.
According to Patnaik’s strongly worded post on X, the incident inside a government office represents an “unspeakable atrocity” unfit for a democracy. “Odisha is witnessing the repressive tactics unleashed by the BJP government against a woman sarpanch for raising the voice of the people,” he stated. He drew a stark contrast with the BJP’s much-touted “Nari Shakti Vandana” (women power) narrative, questioning its sincerity when an elected woman leader faces such treatment for demanding pending bills for her panchayat’s development works.

Ojha, a BJP Sarpanch, had gone to the block office along with her brother and others to press for clearance of pending contractor payments, which she claimed were stalling local projects. She alleged verbal abuse and physical manhandling by supporters of the local BJP MLA, followed by mistreatment by police. Her supporters claim the action was politically motivated to silence her.
Police and administration present a different account. The Block Development Officer (BDO) lodged a complaint accusing Ojha and her brother of forceful entry, creating a ruckus, obstructing officials, and misbehaving with staff. When police intervened, Ojha allegedly assaulted personnel, including a woman sub-inspector, leading to injuries and counter-cases under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. She was arrested, produced in court, and remanded to judicial custody after her bail plea was rejected. CCTV footage from the police station has also surfaced, showing her appearing unwell.
Patnaik highlighted alleged double standards, pointing out that BJP leaders have previously stormed government offices without facing similar consequences. “Is the law different under BJP rule?” he asked, urging Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to intervene immediately to protect the dignity of elected representatives and women’s self-respect.
The episode has triggered widespread reactions. Opposition parties, including BJD and Congress, have demanded a fair probe and action against those responsible for any excesses. The state government has sought a detailed report on the matter, with Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stating that appropriate steps will follow.
As the viral videos and counter-narratives continue to flood social media, the Chameli Ojha case has become a litmus test for governance, women’s empowerment claims, and law enforcement impartiality in the young BJP regime. With both sides digging in, the Kendrapara incident is likely to dominate headlines and assembly debates in the days ahead.
