Leaders from NATO countries, Ukraine and Israel paid tribute on Sunday to US Senator Lindsey Graham, remembering him as a staunch ally, a defender of freedom, and a constant presence in American foreign policy.
Graham, who had visited Ukraine shortly before his death, was widely respected for his unwavering support of NATO, Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression, and the US‑Israel alliance. He had recently announced an agreement with the Trump administration to advance a sanctions package against Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted Graham’s repeated visits to Ukraine, saying, “He was here with our people when it was most needed. Lindsey was a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer.”
Tributes poured in from NATO’s eastern flank. Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna called him “a steadfast friend and strong supporter of NATO’s eastern flank.” Latvia’s Baiba Braze described him as “among the strongest supporters of NATO and transatlantic relations.” Lithuania’s Kestutis Budrys said Graham’s commitment to democracy and security “earned him the respect and gratitude of many across Europe.” Finnish President Alexander Stubb hailed him as “a personal friend, a Transatlanticist, a supporter of NATO and Ukraine.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Graham “a great friend of Israel” and “a cherished friend of mine,” adding, “Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised Graham’s long service in the Air Force and Congress, saying he was “a strong advocate for the United States and a strong ally to freedom‑loving countries across the globe.”
While tributes highlighted Graham’s legacy, Iranian state television reacted with hostility, underscoring the senator’s reputation as a fierce critic of Tehran.
The outpouring of respect from allies underlined Graham’s enduring role in shaping US foreign policy and strengthening democratic partnerships worldwide.
