Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the ASB Classic in Auckland, choosing instead to represent Japan at the United Cup.

She informed tournament director Nicolas Lamperin that she had changed her plans and would begin her 2026 season in Australia.

Meanwhile, Osaka had initially agreed in September to start her campaign in Auckland, where she reached the final earlier this year. However, she decided to prioritise preparation for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, scheduled to begin on January 18 at Melbourne Park.

Furthermore, Osaka will join forces with Shintaro Mochizuki in Japan’s United Cup team. The mixed-team tournament runs from January 2 to 11 in Perth, where Japan will face Britain and Greece in group play.

In addition, her withdrawal reshapes the Auckland event, which had anticipated her presence as a major draw. Fans in New Zealand expressed disappointment, but Osaka’s decision underscores her determination to focus on the bigger stage in Melbourne.

Moreover, the United Cup offers Osaka competitive match practice against strong opponents, helping her sharpen her form ahead of the Australian Open. Her participation also boosts Japan’s chances in the tournament, adding star power to the squad.

Ultimately, Osaka’s move reflects her strategic approach to the 2026 season. By aligning her schedule with the Grand Slam calendar, she aims to maximise performance and reclaim momentum on the global stage.
